Inspired by her trip to New York in 2008, sophomore Taylor Edelhart founded the MoveAbout Theatre to bring movable, outdoor theatre to teens in her hometown of San Francisco, a city that embraces the nontraditional.
After her successful first show, Alice in Wonderland, in 2009, Edelhart directed two more productions, The Miser and Running Shorts, before her graduation from Lowell High School. Taylor now studies theatre at NYU and was a finalist for the prestigious Beach Blanket Babylon scholarship in 2011.
In 2012, Natalie Girshman and Margot Pierluissi directed the company's first Shakespeare play, A Midsummer Night's Dream in Fort Mason park. The company used Fort Mason the following year for The Importance of Being Earnest, directed by Elisa Vidales and Lauren Taylor. The duo's 2014 show, Twelfth Night, used Ocean Beach and the adjacent windmill to originate a new take on an old world.
In 2015, the company produced Agatha Christie's The Hollow in the Presidio. Directed by Avery Chung-Melino and Kali Kecskemeti, the company used the exterior walls of the old Presidio Theatre in the Presidio as the backdrop for the show.
MoveAbout's 2016 production, Oscar Wilde's An Ideal Husband, returned to the Fort Mason park. Directors Kali Kecskemeti and Kate Adler used vivid period costumes and detailed sets to re-create the social scene of 1920's England.
